Essential Oil

How to use Eucalyptus

September 12, 2016

Enjoy a refreshing bath soak

Here are some easy ways to use Eucalyptus:

  • Hang some branches in your shower or steam room (I really want to do this in the shower! I think it will smell heavenly and what a great way to make up in the morning!)
  • Add some leaves to a bath soakEnjoy a refreshing bath soak
  • Use leaves in bowls of hot water to release the fragrance
  • Use Essential Oils in your diffuser
  • Use in a Massage Oil/Cream or in Sugar/Salt Scrubs for sore muscles, sprains, tension, poor circulation, relieve decongestion

This is merely an information piece meant to share the info I learned that I found interesting. So remember to consult your Doctor; this use of this oil can hurt you; and all that other legal crap that no one reads and really you should just use some common sense but either way consider yourself warned and you are on your own.

New EO Tips I Learned From Cynthia Loving

November 30, 2015

I recently went to the Hickory Southern Spa Salon Conference. I want to share some lovely tips  and information I learned from Cynthia Loving about Essential Oils (EOs). Visit her website Loving Scents to learn more about her.

new Bahía temple Chicago pink rose fullLet’s start with some interesting facts:

It takes about 60,000 roses to produce just 1 ounce of oil, and ten thousand pounds of rose blossoms to produce 1 pound of oil. That is a lot of roses!

It takes 3 million jasmine flowers picked by hand or 10lbs of flowers to make 1 lb of oil.

It takes the peels from 20 whole lemons for 1 drop of lemon oil.

DON’T INGEST ESSENTIAL OILS. I know it is very popular right now to ingest Essential Oils (EOs), but this can be deadly and very toxic to your organs.

Aroma diffuser jewelry is great way to use inhalation therapy all day. Use 1 drop, max 2, and enjoy the scent of the therapy throughout your day.

Did you know that the kind of scent you like also says something about your personality? If you like:

Wood Oils – you tend to be a dreamer, but have terrible follow through – tree, root oils are for grounding.

Flower Oils – ylang ylang – you never met a stranger, you are fearless.

Citrus Oils –  you don’t get enough play and need be be reminded to play. Citrus helps elevate mood, great for waiting rooms.

Bergamot – Earl Grey Tea, changes the perception of pain.

EOs are fabulous to use but you really need to use them in a safe and healthy way. There are only a few oils that you can apply directly to the skin, Lavender being one of those. However most oils must be in a carrier oil and must be very diluted.

Some EOs to use with caution – (there are several to be careful with, but these are a couple that we talked about in class):

Wintergreen – can cause hemorrhaging, cannot take with any anticoagulant meds, can kill children with just a few drops. Kids love it because it smells good and taste sweet. This is really an EO that should be used by professionals only. new Bahía temple Chicago honeybee pollenating

Cinnamon EOs (there are several different kinds) – all are very heat producing and although smell lovely, they should be used with caution and should not be sprayed in your mouth. I didn’t know this either and had been using an EO spray that you sprayed into your mouth. Always learning!

If you are using an EO ask the manufacturer for the Certificate of Anaylisis (CofA)  – what the chemical makeup is of that oil – an MSDS Sheet. They should have one on every oil.

Suggested Dosages:

Making a blend for an adult, use 9 drops of EO in 1 oz of CO (Carrier Oil) or 15 drops of EO in 2.5 oz CO.

You should not use EO on anyone under the age of 3. You shouldn’t even use EO in a diffuser for anyone that young.

After the age of 3 you can use a small amount of EO. You can make a blend with 3 drops EO to 1 oz CO for children.

Here are some helpful suggestions about a few oils that we talked about:

Geranium China – great for menopause – can really work well for hot flashes – can use 1 drop under you nose, add to a bath before bed and be sure to mix with milk or epsom salt – something that will help it disburse.

Geranium Rose – similar to Geranium China just has a more rosey scent.

Plai (from Central Thailand) – Ginger family, this is cooling, better anti-inflammatory – great for sore muscles and pain. In studies using undiluted Plai after knee surgery with no pain meds, patients have been doing well.

Adrenal exhaustion – could lead to an autoimmune disease – geranium could help.

If skin will tolerate, use in a bath every day, or do both bath and diffusion or just diffusion.

Bach Flower remedies are great to use.

There is new research showing progress using Frankincense and Lemon with breast cancer. Hopefully some good news will come from this research. Time will tell…..

According to the Bible, the 3 wise men brought Jesus the gifts of Frankincense, Myrrh and Gold. The first 2 are considered healing oils. Frankincense and/or Myrrh would stop the spread of disease, things that rotted the flesh like leprosy. Read more about it in this article, A Wise Man’s Cure: Frankincense and Myrrh.

new Chicago Botanical gardens tiny peppersI just bought a blend for pain for Nan and going to take it to her at Christmas. I will let you know what she thinks.

Diabetes can be hormone related – ylang ylang is really good for the pancreas. It can be used in hot compresses. It could help to regulate Type 1 Diabetes.

Acne – Hormone – can add geranium or clary sage to a mix of orange and patchouli then apply to the skin. Acne can be caused by several different things. Narrowing down the cause will help you treat it better.

Gut – Brain Tie – if your gut is messed up eat coconut oil. I have actually been doing this for acid reflux and it helps a lot.

Great herbal tea to try for helping your gut: Turmeric, Ginger tea and 2 tsp of coconut oil

Studies are currently being done on the affect coconut oil has on Alzheimer’s and how it could stop and sometimes reverse early stages of the disease. I figure it can’t hurt.

Lavender is a Wonderful Thing!

May 25, 2015

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil

In this post I am continuing to share some ideas for Essential Oils in Aromatherapy that I learned from *Cate Alber in April at our Women’s Social Business Group. Today’s ideas are for your personal use, last post I shared several ideas for household use.

Two EOs that should be in everyone’s first aid kit: Lavender and Tea Tree oil. I prefer Lavender Spikey because of its smell. It has a little spicy smell and sort of sassy.

Have you ever forgotten to use your Coola or Colorscience sunscreen? Of course I know you would never do that, but just in case you had a moment of crazy thinking I’ll give you a little formula to help you out. To heal your burn use 10 drops of Lavender, 5 drops of Frankincense (if you don’t have this don’t worry, just use the Lavender), add to 2 Tablespoons of Jojoba Oil or Aloe (the good stuff, not the kind with parabens, fragrance or other junk!). If you have an Aloe plant just smash some up and add your EOs to it. It is best to take the heat out of your skin first so take an ice cold shower if you can handle it, or soak the body part in ice cold water.

For any burn, use a drop of lavender straight on the burn as soon as you’ve run it under cold water to cool it down.

Have you ever burned your hand on a pan while you were cooking? I have been cooking more lately. I made the brilliant mistake of totally grabbing the handle of a hot skillet I had just pulled out of the oven! HELLO!!!!!!! Oh my word, OUCH! Any how, I first soaked my hand in ice cold water, then I added some smashed Aloe and used a salve that has Lavender in it. I really expected my hand to blister. It was sore and a little red the next day, but not bad at all. That Lavender really works!

If you want to take a healing bath, use 5-20 drops of EOs with Epsom salts, Himalayan salts or whole milk. This will help disperse the oil better. Avoid hot oils in the bath, like Peppermint, Thyme, Oregano, Clove or Cinnamon. Bath friendly oils include Lavender, Patchouli, Cypress, Frankincense, Ylang Ylang, Geranium and many more!

Grapefruit, Cypress and Juniper oil added to a sugar or salt scrub are perfect for helping with cellulite.

2 drops of Lavender and 1 drop of Peppermint are a life saver for a headache! Massage into temples, between your brows and the back of the neck (or at least for me since my headaches start back there a lot) and under your nose. Inhale deeply and wipe the excess on a tissue so you can inhale throughout the day.

I had a terrible headache a few weeks ago and thought I was going to have to cancel my day. I had already taken 2 Aleve, which is not normal for me at all. If I take anything it might just be 1, but I knew this was going to be a doozy. I felt nauseated, like I was going to pass out or throw up. It was pretty rough. Within 15 minutes of using the oils my headache was almost gone. A short time afterwards and it was gone altogether.

Any EO that smells like food will help control appetite: Grapefruit, Orange, Lemon, Cinnamon, Clove, Thyme, Sage, or Rosemary are just a few you could use. Place the oil on a tissue and inhale. You can also use the oil in a diffuser.

Need help with sugar cravings? Try Cinnamon, Grapefruit and Patchouli. You can put a drop of each on a tissue or cotton ball and inhale. You could also add 3 drops of each to a roller bottle and dilute it with a carrier oil of your choice, like fractionated coconut, jojoba, or grapeseed.

I hope you find these tips as helpful as I do! Let me know which ones are your favorites after you try them. Talk to you soon!

Aromatherapy For Spring and Summer

May 22, 2015

Cate Alber 2

In April, *Cate Alber from Pure on Main came to talk with the Women’s Social Business Group I am part of. She spoke about using aromatherapy for the spring and summer, some basics to help with allergies, weight loss, and insect repellent as well as other things.

Essential Oils, or EOs, are used in aromatherapy. Aromatherapy works with the body via multiple pathways: through inhalation and olfaction, and through application to the skin. When you inhale an essential oil, it quickly crosses into your bloodstream through your lungs. Many oils are also very effective at crossing the blood-brain barrier, and immediately act upon the emotional centers of your brain. Here are a few things I learned during the meeting that I wanted to share with you. In this post I will share some ideas for household use with you.

new Chicago Botanical gardens black eyed susans

Want a natural bug spray for plants? Use 1 teaspoon Eucalyptus to 2 cups of water. Spray lightly on plants.

Bay leaves or Bay EO in your pantry will help deter weevils.

Cederwood helps keep away cockroaches.

Have a problem with silverfish? Use Rosemary sprigs or a few drops of Rosemary oil on a cotton ball and place around the area with the problem.

Add a few drops of Lavender to a cotton ball and use to deter moths.

Use Peppermint to keep mice away. A few drops on a cotton ball placed wherever they might be sneaking in is effective.

Use a Borax and sugar mixture, dissolved in water, to get rid of ants. Use 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 1/2 Tablespoons Borax and 1 1/2 cups warm water. Soak cotton balls in the mixture or saturate a paper towel and lay in the area the ants are. They will feast on it, and carry it back to their home. After a few days, your ant problem should disappear!

Want to protect your dogs from fleas? Try adding 5 drops total of Lavender, Eucalyptus and Citrus oils (like Orange, Lemon or Grapefruit, your choice). Apply to a cloth collar. This remedy is not to be used on other pets, just dogs.

To help deter ticks, use 30 drops each of Lavender, Lemongrass and Geranium oils to 2 cups water. Be sure to shake well before each use to disperse the oil. Spray directly onto your dogs coat. You can also use this one on yourself, just spray on your skin.

Lavender is good if you get stung or bit. Just apply a drop to the bite area. If you are using this on little kids, add a few drops of lavender to a teaspoon of aloe gel and apply that mixture to their bites.

Next post I will be sharing lots of other Lavender ideas for helping you with all sorts of things from headaches to sunburn.
