June 12th is International Cachaça Day
In my search for a cool holiday for June, I came across International Cachaça Day, on June 12th! YUM! Sold, done, this is our holiday for the month.
Cachaça is from Brazil and is made from leftover pure sugarcane juice. Rum is a close cousin and is made out of molasses, a by-product of sugarcane. Once known as the poor man’s drink, cachaça is now big business and super yummy!
And my favorite drink (to date) made with cachaça, Caipirinha!

Strawberry Caipirinha
Ingredients:
- 2 whole strawberries (or any berry will do)
- 2 lime wedges
- 2 teaspoons raw sugar
- 2 ounces cachaça (I like Boca Loca and you can get it at the ABC store on Augusta Rd near McAlister Deli)
Directions:
Muddle strawberries, lime wedges and raw sugar. Add cachaça and ice. Shake and serve.

Father’s Day Musings
Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 15th and the best man in my life is my Grandpa – aka Shoopy.
Shoopy is not just my Grandpa, he is my best friend.
He taught me how to drive a stick shift (you know you learn fast when you are getting knocked across the head).
He taught me how to change a tire – in PA, in January, in the snow!
When my brothers were glued to the TV on Saturday mornings, I would be hanging out with Shoopy. I chopped wood with him, worked in the garden, cut grass, or really whatever he was doing, I was there too.
My Grandparents and I would go to church and then go out to eat every Sunday. Shoopy used to fly down the back roads where there were a lot of hills just so we could make my Nana yell and threaten us. We would just laugh at her.
She eventually refused to go grocery shopping with us as well. One time Shoopy and I accidentally knocked over a few dog food bags from a display and tipped the cart over and almost broke Nana’s eggs. We used to do wheelies with the cart or slam our foot down on the wheel and whip it around in a 180 or maybe 360 depending on how good we were! Lol Good times.
I am so proud of him. He was a Marine in WWII serving on the Midway Islands. He later joined the Army and retired as a Sgt Major after going to Vietnam. He has all sorts of medals for his service.
Shoopy is old school and doesn’t say much. But mostly he’s always there. He will listen to me ramble on and then maybe give me a few words of wisdom. He doesn’t really ever say I Love You but always tells me to Watch the Ice. That’s kind of our own special code.
I know the day will come when all I will have are these memories and I am so thankful that I got to know him and my Grandmother. So many people miss out on having time with their Grandparents.
Shoopy was diagnosed with a blood cancer in the fall. Mostly he has been doing really well but the last few weeks have been tough. I will be spending Father’s Day with the best man I know – hope you enjoy your celebration as well.
An Important Summer Reminder and Sunday Appointments
Reminder: The weather is hot, hot hot – be sure to NOT leave your skincare or make-up items in the car. This breaks down and destroys your products! If you have to leave them in the car use a cooler or freezer bag with an ice pack in it. Or bring your items inside!
Out of the office:
- June 25-June 30 – My Mom is here and we will hopefully be renovating the shop or moving me into a new house. Either way I will be closed.
- July 1-3 – Mom is still here and I will be working a limited schedule.
- July 4th – closed
- July 19-23 OR 23-28 – I will be in PA visiting with the Fam and celebrating my niece’s 8th birthday! (trying to narrow these dates down with Mom now)
- Aug 2-4 – getting to visit with old friends who I haven’t seen in almost 20 years in Myrtle Beach! How crazy is that? He was like my brother growing up – his Mom and my Mom were best friends. Random email out of the blue on Facebook from my friend’s wife and wham – reunion time!
Other than that, work is on like usual!
