Skincare and Makeup Expiration Guidelines

Skincare Lotion

Do you have bottles and jars dating back to who-knows-when? How long is mascara supposed to last, anyway? Here’s a general guide for when to toss and buy new.

Tip: When you open a new container, write the month and date on the label. That way you know exactly how old it is.

  • Cleanser: 6 months – 1 year
  • Toner: 1 year
  • Eye cream: 6 months – 1 year
  • Moisturizer: 1 year

If possible all skincare products should be in a pump or container that minimizes contact with the air and your finger tips. This reduces the chance of contamination.

Still have eyeshadow from high school and your reunion is approaching? The list below tells you how long you should keep your make-up (hint: ten years is too long).Makeup Compact

  • Blush: 2 years
  • Concealer: 1 year
  • Eye pencils: 1 year
  • Eye shadow: 1 year
  • Foundation: 1 – 1 ½ years
  • Lip pencils: 1 year
  • Lipstick: 1 – 1 ½ years
  • Mascara: 3 – 6 MONTHS
  • Powder: 2 years

If you have had some type of eye infection you should throw away any eye product that you have used, or you risk reinfection!

When it doubt – throw it out!
