Revisiting The Clear Skin Diet

I have had several clients lately with terrible problems with their skin. So I thought I would reshare my thoughts about The Clear Skin Diet book. I read it a few years ago and I thought it might be a good reminder.

I know everyone one has a different belief if food actually causes your skin to break out. It has been my experience that it plays a role. This could be because you are eating too much dairy, sugar or gluten, or it could be that you have an over abundance of yeast in the body, or for some reason your body is not processing your food as well as it should.

I have had to send a few clients to Alison Lively at Creative Health because I knew that I could only do so much topically for a few of my clients. Their problem really was internal. My Saucy Chica products are fabulous and did help them have smoother skin and lessened the length and severity of the breakouts but we still needed to call in reinforcements. So we called Ali.

I am not going to lie, sometimes it is hard to do all the things Ali wants you to do. And if it is too much then you have to start with just one thing, whatever you know you can handle or whatever Ali feels is the most important. I know I have to do this. She knows if she gives me too much, I am done before I even start. I have weeks I do really well and then weeks I do terrible. I have to prepare and plan ahead, something that I am not very good at.

But this is what I do in a perfect week and when I do it I feel so much better!

Lemon water is good for you8-16 oz of water with lemon first thing in the am

8-12 oz of greens drink - I do not have a set recipe for this as I use up whatever I happen to have in the fridge. I usually have granny smith apples, carrots, kale, spinach, another fruit, 2 dandelion leaves (I think this is for my dumb liver that is always acting up.), lemons, limes, red beets if I have them, celery, parsley, mint. I mean really you can follow a recipe or just see what needs to be used up in the fridge. Sometimes my concoctions come out better than others so a recipe might be easier to start with. You can find lots of them online. I try to have this on my way to work.

One little trick I learned is to make up a blender full of greens and then strain with my strainer or nut milk bag so I get all the yucky pulp bits out. It makes it a lot easier to drink. I then pour the strained greens into mason jars - I will get 2-3 jars depending on the size I'm using. I mainly use freezer jam jar size or the smaller pint jars. Then I have enough for 2-3 days. I also cut up all of my stuff at once - I put one lot in the blender to puree the next day and another amount in a bowl to puree the next time I need greens. It makes prep time a little easier. I do the same with my lemon or lime water. I do about 3 days worth. That way I can just grab jars and go. I also have done this with plain greek yogurt and fruit. Makes breakfast a lot easier.

While I am getting ready I also usually grill a piece of Publix Greenwise chicken sausage on my George Foreman grill. I love these sausages. I usually wrap it in tin foil and eat it after yoga class.

What is The Clear Skin Diet?

The Clear Skin Diet focuses on problematic skin: What are the causes? Get beautiful skin from the insideDo food and hormones play a role in our skin's health? I'll also suggest treatment ideas and foods to help your body and your skin.

This book has been a very interesting read and if you or someone you know is having skin challenges I would highly suggest reading this book.

According to The Clear Skin Diet there are several commonalities among nations with healthy skin.

  • Less Processed Food
  • Colorful Antioxidants
  • Greater Intake of Omega-3 Fatty Acids - Omega-3 oils have anti-inflammatory properties whereas Omega-6 oils like corn, safflower, sunflower and soybean oil increase linoleic acid which promotes inflammation. Omega 3 oils include: Olive Oil (should not be used at high temperatures), Flaxseed (cannot be heated!), and Fish.
  • Fewer foods that spike blood sugar
  • Lots of Fiber
  • No Milk!

Below are just a few ideas to get you started on your path to greater health even if you have perfect or close to perfect skin. There were even more ideas in the book that I did not have time to discuss. Hope this helps you on the journey of healthy skin and healthy body.

What Exactly is Acne?

There are several potential causes for acne but first what exactly is acne? Basically acne happens when the hair follicle becomes clogged because the cells are unable to shed. A mixture of "cells, fat and other gunk" creates a blackhead.

A papule happens when the follicle cannot contain the gunk that keeps collecting in the follicle. This causes the red bump that you feel under the skin. When the dam bursts and the bacteria spills out a pustule is formed.

Although it is hard to not mess with blackheads, papules and pustules it is very important to try to keep your mitts off them. You can cause more damage and scarring. I know this is hard and we are all guilty of messing with things when we should not. BUT - if you are going to mess with something be sure your skin and hands are clean, that you warm up the area, and DO NOT mess with a papule that has not formed a white head! This will cause a mess and potentially leave a scar.

If an area will not budge do not force it, leave it alone - you can always come see me and I will run the high frequency machine over it. This will help to kill the bacteria and hopefully make it go away quicker. Also, be sure to spot treat the area with an acne treatment.

What Causes Acne?

Food

So there is a misconception in most medical communities that acne has no correlation to the foods that are eaten. For the most part traditional Western medicine does not study nutrition; they are trained to treat a disease, not necessarily find the core problem and fix it.

In addition to foods that can cause it, lack of some nutrients can contribute to acne. Low levels of zinc are associated with acne - it can also increase fatigue, depression, and poor mental performance. So you might want to have your zinc levels checked.

Hormones suck!Hormones

Hormones are another potential cause for acne. Ladies, we all know how this works - not only do we have to deal with the pain from our menstrual cycles but we usually get at least 1 or 2 of the nasty cysts. Unfortunately this is not just a problem for teens! I had more problems in my late 20's and then again in my mid 30's then I ever did as a teen. I remember getting a blemish here or there but nothing like later in life. Which is amazing because when I was a teen I had no skincare routine at all. I was blessed with my grandmother's skin for the most part so I got lucky as a teen. The acne that I developed in my 20's and 30's was actually from stress and out of control hormone levels.

Medications

Did you know that there are medications that can actually cause your acne? Here is a list of medications that could be contributing to your unhealthy skin.

Most common:

  • Anabolic steroids (testosterone, danazol)
  • Bromides
  • Corticosteroids (prednisone)
  • Corticotropin
  • Isoniazid
  • Lithium
  • Phenytoin
  • DHEA

Least Common

  • Azathioprine
  • Cyclosporine
  • Disulfiram (antabuse)
  • Phenobarbitol
  • Quinidine
  • Tetracycline
  • Excess B vitamins (B1, B6, B12)

Skincare Products

Although this was not really discussed in the book in detail it is important to note that products can also exacerbate your acne or be the root cause.

Skincare Routines For Acne

So what is the best course of action topically that you can take to treat your acne? Wash twice daily with a mild cleanser - Wash your face twice a dayThe authors recommended 3 different washes and I have tried those but for one reason or another they did not work for me.

I would agree though that using a mild cleanser twice daily is optimal - over washing can make the skin too dry and cause more problems.

I have actually found that our Saucy Chica Butternut Squash and Salicylic Oil Cleansers are perfect to help with breakouts. The oil can actually be used as a moisturizer as well. I know it is a different concept but oil cleanser is super gentle on the skin. We also now have an acne serum called Aspen Bark. This works really well without making the skin red or irritated.

I do not think there is a one type fits all acne treatment. I think it is a combination of things that help your skin. But you must have patience and be consistent. I know that if I slack off a little on my routine, I have problems with my skin.

Some Clear Skin Snack Ideas

Last month I listed great foods to include and some not-great foods to leave out of your diet. This month I want to give you some more specific snack ideas from the book. I know how busy everyone is and we all have good intentions. Eating at home or bringing my own snacks/lunch is something I have always struggled with. I am getting better about this, so just do the best you can - remember every little bit helps and you do not have to do it all right off the bat. Do a little bit every day.

It takes 21 days to make something a habit. So if all you can do is bring your own snacks 3x a week then that is a start. The important thing is you have to decide you want to do xyz because you really want to not just because you "should".

There are so many great snack ideas in this book but I am only going to list a few. If you struggle with acne, or just want to improve your skin from the inside out, I recommend you buy the book for a lot of recipe ideas as well as menu suggestions to help you get started.

  • Dip ideas - Black Bean, Hummus, Artichoke, Salsa, Guacamole, Pesto, Spinach - be creative.
  • Baked Chips (corn, brown rice, or potato) you can eat these with the dip ideas I have listed above. I love Rice Works Brown Rice Chips - they are Vegan and Gluten Free as well. I can usually get these at Costco.
  • Edamame in the pods - steam, sprinkle with salt and yummy! FYI - Don't eat the pods!
  • Have an apple or pear with goat cheese or a nut butter.
  • Use a whole wheat flour tortilla (I like Ezekial wraps for this because they are Gluten Free) and make a quesadilla. Use goat cheese, feta, or Manchego and grilled or sauteed onions and/or peppers. CucumberGrill, toast or broil the quesadilla, then add tomato or salsa and avocado. I like using the George Foreman grill for this. Super quick, less mess and easy to clean up.
  • Cucumbers - top with feta, Manchego, nut butter, meats or hard boiled egg.
  • Of course any veggie is good, so be creative - make a Fresh Roll or Summer Roll with some type of cabbage, shredded carrots, radishes, cucumbers, fresh mint or basil leaves. You can add chicken or shrimp too. Use spring roll wraps and place your veggies and/or meat of choice into your wrap and roll! So easy! If you want a dipping sauce, try soy sauce or tamarind and vinegar and add a little honey, molasses or I would think agave nectar would work well, too.
