So I am a little behind in my November newsletter and I am so glad I waited (well actually I am just behind! Lol) but I learned a lot of cool stuff at the Southern Spa and Salon Conference. I hope that I can remember all of the neat things I have learned this weekend and can incorporate them into my practice.

I am also excited about several new items we are now carrying from the Saucy Chica line just in time for Thanksgiving. We have a Pumpkin Power Exfoliant and a Butternut Squash Cleanser - just to name a couple of the new products!

Why use pumpkin?

Believe it or not there is more to pumpkin than just pumpkin pie!

Pumpkin fruit is one of the widely grown vegetables that is incredibly rich in vital antioxidants and vitamins. This humble backyard low-calorie vegetable contains vitamin A, flavonoid poly-phenolic antioxidants such as leutin, xanthin, and carotenes in abundance. Pumpkin seeds are a great source of protein, minerals, vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids.

The Health Benefits of Pumpkin

Pumpkin is a very low calorie vegetable. A 100 gram serving provides just 26 calories and contains no saturated fats or cholesterol; however, it is rich in dietary fiber, anti-oxidants, minerals, vitamins.

Pumpkin is one of the food items recommended by dietitians in cholesterol controlling and weight reduction programs.

Pumpkin is a storehouse of many anti-oxidant vitamins such as vitamin-A, vitamin-C and vitamin-E.

It features the highest levels of vitamin-A, providing about 246% of RDA, in all of the gourd family. Vitamin A is a powerful natural anti-oxidant and is required by the body for maintaining the integrity of skin and mucus membranes. It is also an essential vitamin for good visual sight. Research studies suggest that natural foods rich in vitamin A help a body protects against lung and oral cavity cancers.

ApplePumpkin is also an excellent source of many natural poly-phenolic flavonoid compounds such as beta carotenes, cryptoxanthin, lutein and zea-xanthin. Carotenes convert into vitamin A inside the body. Zea-xanthin is a natural anti-oxidant which has UV (ultra-violet) rays filtering actions in the macula lutea in retina of the eyes. Thus, it helps protect from "age-related macular disease" (ARMD) in the elderly.

Pumpkin is a good source of the B-complex group of vitamins like folates, niacin, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), thiamine and pantothenic acid.

It is also a rich source of minerals like copper, calcium, potassium and phosphorus.

Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of dietary fiber and mono-unsaturated fatty acids, which are good for heart health. In addition, the seeds are concentrated sources of protein, minerals and health-benefiting vitamins. For instance, 100 g of pumpkin seeds provide 559 calories, 30 g of protein, 110% RDA of iron, 4987 mg of niacin (31% RDA), selenium (17% of RDA), zinc (71%) etc., but no cholesterol. Further, the seeds are an excellent source of health promoting amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is converted to GABA in the brain.

Holy Smokes, that is a lot of goodness in one pretty package! Good for you inside AND out!

Things that make you go "hmmmm..."

Some little tidbits of information that I learned this weekend. Maybe some of these things will help you.

  • Diet Soda makes you hungrier! Not only is diet soda just plain bad for you, it can actually make you gain weight.
  • Burts Bees was bought out by Johnson and Johnson and is now made in a Clorox Factory. So sad that the smaller companies like this get bought out by larger companies and then things change. The same thing happened to Aveda and I always wonder what the deal is with Ben and Jerry's. They were bought out as well.
  • 30 peaches equal about the same sugar content as a Snickers bar (Holy Smokes!)
  • If you have Asthma or Upper Respiratory issues try learning to play the clarinet or another horn to increase your lung health.
  • If you or your child is constantly getting a runny nose and sinus issues try taking out bananas, dairy and peanuts all that are mucus causing foods and see if this helps or eliminates the problem.
  • Goats milk is the most similar to human milk.
  • If you have a hyper thyroid you should avoid cruciferous veggies.
  • Eat Green to cool down. If you tend to be cold eat more red veggies and fruit, it adds "fire" and heats things up.
  • Prenatals are actually great vitamins for everyone to take. Stay away from Centrum - they are too hard for the body to break down.

I have some other cool stuff to talk about later. But this was some funny random stuff! ;)

Beef and Pumpkin Soup

Girl Eating SoupThis is a recipe I found that I thought looked interesting and yummy. I am planning to tweak it a little though. I'm going to take out the corn and I think pasta and add potatoes instead.

This will actually be the second recipe this month where I have used fresh pumpkin. I made pumpkin risotto the other week. It was yummy but it was still missing a little something, but not sure what.

(Well I did make pumpkin pancakes but since most of my stuff is packed and ready to move, I couldn't find my griddle. I ended up giving them to Tina! Oh well...they smelled good.)

Beef and Pumpkin Soup

  • 1 1/2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 10 ounce package frozen whole kernel corn
  • 1 1/2 cups peeled and seeded pumpkin or butternut squash, cut in 1/2 inch pieces
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 8-ounce can tomato sauce
  • 3/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green sweet pepper
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 ounces dried whole wheat macaroni or other small pasta
  • 1/4 cup snipped fresh parsley

In a 3 1/2 to 5-quart slow cooker combine meat, corn, pumpkin, water, tomato sauce, onion, sweet pepper, garlic, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg.

Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 10 to 12 hours or on high-heat setting for 5-6 hours.

Cook pasta according to package directions; drain. Stir pasta into the soup.

Ladle soup into bowls; sprinkle each serving with parsley.
