July is the month of the Raspberry Moon!

According to certain American Indian traditions there are seasons of moons as well as cycles of moons. Julyish is known as The Berry Month - Blueberry and Raspberry (Juneish is Strawberry Moon). This is where the idea for Raspberry Moon began.

I was riding in the car with one of my closest friends, Stephanie, and my crazy little nephew Jackson. We were laughing about the amount of berries Jackson could inhale (he was only around 2). He would literally eat blueberries until he pooped blue. Gross but true story.

My nephew JacksonSomehow we went from that to the cycles of the moon and from there Steph told me about something she had read about seasons of the moon. I'd never heard of that, and she started naming of different seasons of the moon. Sparkle!! (Our term for random changing of topics for no apparent reason!)

I liked Strawberry Moon but thought it sounded like Boones Farm - that cheap wine in a cardboard box. I said "oohh ohhh - what do you think about Raspberry Moon?" of course she knew what I was talking about right away and loved it as the name for the business!

After 2 years in my own place (well actually I had been thinking about a name before I was even an Esthetician!) we finally decided on a name!

The two sites I have listed I thought were interesting. The second one has a lot of information on the moons and seasons.

A July Sercie for you:

Everyone coming in for any service this month will receive a sample size .25 oz refillable spray bottle of our Ocean Mist Body Spray.

It's very important to hydrate your skin - especially after exfoliating. We don't want the skin to get to dry but we also don't want to clog the follicles. Our Ocean Mist Spray will hydrate and calm the skin and smells like a fresh ocean breeze!

A Salute to the first Americans

I thought I would share this little piece of history with you as I found it interesting.

Russell Means’ explanation of the term Indian:

"There is also some confusion about the word Indian, a mistaken belief that it refers somehow to the country, India. When Columbus washed up on the beach in the Caribbean, he was not looking for a country called India. Europeans were calling that country Hindustan in 1492. Look it up on the old maps. Columbus called the tribal people he met 'Indio,' from the Italian in dio, meaning 'in God.'"

Native American womanRussell Means is an AIM (American Indian Movement) activist. He prefers the term American Indian, or better yet, the name of the particular tribe in its native language. He is a strong advocate of American Indian rights and works towards preserving their cultures.

His book Where White Men Fear to Tread is very interesting and eye-opening. If you get a chance you should read it. It is very sad what happened to the American Indian culture and to their children. You would probably be horrified at their treatment. I was. It didn't stop after they were forced on the reservations.

For more information about Russell Means check out his site at http://russellmeans.com/. He has played in several movies so you might recognize him.

Another awesome book is In The Spirit of Crazy Horse by Peter Mattheissen. You have to read this book page by page and not skip anything! It is a very eye opening read about events that took place on the Reservations of mainly the Sioux Nation.

My brother Jeremy actually met Dennis Banks, an AIM activist, in Amsterdam. His family was killed by FBI agents - his house was bombed, though never proven in court if I remember correctly. Jeremy was reading one of my papers for college about AIM and he started saying, "Hey I met this guy and this is totally the story that he told us."

I just thought it was interesting and that I would share.

American EagleHappy Independence Day America! Another day to say thank you to the men and women who have protected our country and allowed us to enjoy the freedoms that we possess today. If not for those strong individuals we might be having tea and crumpets every afternoon - hahahah!

Since I seem to be on a history role this month - I thought I'd share another bit of information I learned. I remember a few years ago receiving an email about what happened to the men that signed the Declaration of Independence. I also remember forwarding it (this was before I knew about Snopes!) If you are interested to read about the famous men who signed check out the link below:

New Service! - Eco-Fin Hand and Feet Treatment

I stopped using paraffin a number of years ago. It was messy, it never seemed to be melted when I needed it, I was concerned about cross contamination and I also thought the fragrance was too strong.

For the summer we have a delicious blend to experience:

Girls we all know how hard we are on our hands and feet so let's take a little better care of them. I don't know about you but I have noticed lately that my heels are looking a little rough and could use some extra attention.

Out of the Office

Just a reminder I will be out of the office with limited phone and email access July 9-15 and August 9-15. While I am out of the office text and email will probably be the easiest way to reach me. I will be in the mountains part of the time so I usually get texts but not calls.

Please put my contact info in your phone so you'll always be able to reach me:

  • Phone - 864.271.2710 - you CAN'T text me at this number!
  • Text - If you prefer to text please let me know and I will give you the number you can text me on.
  • Email - Nicole@raspberrymoonst.com - this should go directly to my phone.
  • Facebook - Raspberry Moon is also on Facebook so you can reach me through there as well.

If in 24 hours I have not responded please recontact me - I may have not received your message. I am generally in the office Tuesday through Friday. I do try to answer the phone as much as possible, but if I am with a client I will not answer the phone. Please leave a message.

Have a safe and fabulous summer!
