Map of JordanLet's go to Jordan!

Your spa-cation this month is to the unique country of Jordan located between Saudi Arabia in the south and east, Syria and Iraq in the north, and Israel & the Palestinian West Bank in the west. The country has an area of 34,445 square miles and a coastline of only 16 miles along the Gulf of Aqaba in the south. Jordan shares its longest border with Saudi Arabia, some 452 miles. Amman, Jordan's capital, is located in the northwest of the country. Jordan occupies an area slightly smaller than Indiana.

August 23rd is Queen Noor's birthday. Born Lisa Najeeb Halaby to a wealthy Arab American family, Queen Noor is a Princeton graduate and in 1978 became the wife of King Hussein. If you have not read her book, Leap of Faith: Memoirs of an Unexpected Life, you should - it is very interesting and gives you a different view of the Middle East.

Queen Noor has worked to create peace and woman's rights in the Middle East and around the world. She is not only a beautiful person but a strong woman and has a huge heart.

"... I've seen it around the world, in the poorest countries and in countries riven with conflict, ... It is women who are the key to breaking out of poverty, breaking out of stagnation. ... It's women who can contribute to achieving real security -- not bombs and bullets and repressive governments." - Queen Noor (Interview with the Queen in Marie Claire Magazine: http://www.marieclaire.com/world-reports/inspirational-women/citizen-queen)

Question of the day - What is aromatherapy and how do we use it?

Essential Oils for AromatherapyAromatherapy is the holistic practice of using pure plant derived essential oils in maintaining or regaining wellbeing of body, mind and spirit. Aromatherapy treatments carry a number of benefits, including the fact that there are likely to be fewer side effects than with conventional medicine. There are very few conventional medicines which do not cause any side effects at all, whereas, there are very few cases of a side effect from a natural remedy.

With methods such as bathing, massage and poultice, the oils are absorbed directly into the skin. This can be beneficial for soothing physical pain in muscles as well as calming anxiety and easing other negative emotions. Inhalation and infusions can have a positive effect on respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis. These methods can be very simple as they can be in the form of a joss stick, candle or aromatherapy burner. As these are inhaled, either directly (infusion) or indirectly, using the right oils can promote improved respiratory health.

Pamper Yourself At Home - Sunburn Treatment

Got a little pink from the sun? First you must stop the burn:

  • Use cool wet compresses for first 48 hours. Some report baking soda or vinegar compresses are comforting. Do not use ice.
  • Cool oatmeal baths may be helpful
  • NO lotions or petroleum jelly in the first 48 hours! These hold in the heat!
  • You MAY use Aloe Vera Gels in the first 48 hours
  • Apply moisturizing lotions after 48 hours
  • Aspirin taken as directed on the label may help ease pain
  • Seek medical attention if fever, fluid-filled blisters, dizziness or visual disturbances are present Sunburnt beauty

After Sun Soothing Bath

  • 2 cup of finely ground oats
  • 2 cups of whole milk
  • 10 drops of Lavender essential oil

Instructions: Combine milk and oatmeal in a saucepan and cook until slightly warm and mixed - do not boil or cook to the same point as when you are preparing for breakfast - you're making a lukewarm slurry. Remove, and add lavender oil. Stir ingredients in a lukewarm or cool bath. The Lavender Essential oil has healing agents particularly suited to sunburn relief. Whole milk has fats and lactic acid which are softening and soothing to sunburned skin and speed healing. The fat is important, so don't use skim milk. The oatmeal also speeds healing and protects the skin - the light film which remains after the bath should be kept in place as long as possible.

Event of the Month - Belly Dancing Performance and Arab Dinner

Belly Dance PerformanceWednesday, August 26th - come out and experience a little Arab hospitality at Acropolis on Pelham Rd, near Earthfare. Belly Dancing with Me (Noura) and local performers - Brandy with BellyMuse, Ra'eesah Ra'naa, and Shirabella.

Hopefully we'll have a sampler platter to try some new food - still trying to convince Rihad (owner of Acropolis) that Americans do want to try traditional food. If you are interested in a special dinner let me know - it will be easier to convince him!

Just an FYI - Throughout the Arab region the cuisine can vary, for instance in Palestine falafel can be made differently from one town to the next and they can be only miles apart! You can tell where someone is from just how they make their falafel! And believe me how you make the "correct/best" falafel can be a big debate!

Please call Acropolis at 458-9000 today to make your reservation, seating is limited.

We've Joined the 3/50 Project!

The 3/50 Project We are thrilled to be involved with a great new project aimed at boosting our OWN local economy! Did you know that for every $100 you spend at a locally owned store, $68 stays in the community via payroll, taxes, etc. but if you spend that same amount of money at a nationally owned chain store, only $43 stays here? And if you buy online, $0 benefits our city...unless it's a locally owned web business....

So before you spend your hard earned money, think about how that will impact our great part of the world. Let's keep our green in Greenville! Find out more at www.the350project.net.
