Congratulations to Brandy White for winning our contest on famous Brazilians!

Raspberry Moon goes to MexicoLet's go to Mexico!

We are going to move north just a little bit this month to Mexico (north of Brazil, which we featured last month, not north of the US, for those of you who don't remember last month's newsletter)! Mexico has become famous in the US for Cinco de Mayo - the funny part is most Mexicans do not celebrate this holiday!

Though in the US it's thought of as Mexican Independence Day (which is actually September 16th), the holiday actually commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. So Cinco de Mayo is really only celebrated in the city of Puebla.

Maybe we just like Cinco de Mayo better because it's easier to pronounce than Dieciséis de Septiembre! Plus any day we can have a reason to celebrate is good, right? Speaking of celebrations, be sure to check out our event of the month - in honor of Cinco de Mayo, we're having a Tequila Tasting Event!

Remember Mom this month!

Mother's Day is May 10th! Remember Mom this Mother's Day with a relaxing 1 hour facial from Raspberry Moon. Give us a call and we will have your gift ready and waiting or you can always go to our online store and purchase a gift certificate instantly!

May is Melanoma Awareness Month

Every year I harp on you about May being Melanoma Awareness Month - I give you the numbers, I tell you have to protect yourself, I give you specials on suncreen and I remind you to have your yearly once over with your dermatologist. Are you listening to me?? Well - just in case you missed it the last 500 times I've told you here is a shortened version.

Watch out for that sunPrevention Guidelines from the Skin Cancer Foundation

  • Seek the shade, especially between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M.
  • Do not burn.
  • Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.
  • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day.
  • Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours.
  • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.
  • Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
  • See your physician every year for a professional skin exam.

As an add on - use a SPF30 for more intense sun exposure. Our powdered sunscreens can be used on pregnant women and babies - just check with your doctor.

Apply your sunscreen before you put on your bathing suit! Your bathing suit moves and you will not always hit all those places if you already have your suit on. Totally got part of my butt burnt one time! Learned my lesson. Remember to reapply every hour when you are at the beach, lake or the slopes!

And just in case you don't believe me, how about listening to another Nicole:

Hollywood Secrets to Looking Younger - Tips From Dermatologists & Skin Care Pros
They stay out of the sun. Nicole Kidman is famously afraid of the sun. She stays out of it at all costs. In fact, many celebrities simply avoid that sun by wearing hats and slathering on sunscreen. They know the sun is the No. 1 cause of prematurely aging skin.

"You and I can avoid the sun by not only wearing hats, but getting in the habit of wearing sunscreen every day, no matter the weather. (I'm also a big fan of teaching sons and daughters about sunscreen very early in life)." -Nicole Kidman

CoralQuestion of the day - Are Sunscreens Harming Coral Reefs?

According to a study done by Italian marine biologist Roberto Danovaro, as we slathering on the sunscreen to help protect us from skin cancer, we are inadvertently killing a beautiful part of nature.

Basically what is happening is the coral reefs are dying because they are losing the zooxanthella, a symbiotic alga that lives off of them. These plants provide the coral with food and are what enable fishthe coral to have its beautiful color. This is also harming other species that have a symbiotic relationship with the coral reef like soft coral, giant clams, and some sponges. It should also be noted that increase in water temperatures also plays a role in bleaching the coral reefs.

The researchers estimate that 4,000 to 6,000 metric tons of sunscreen washes off swimmers annually in oceans worldwide, and that up to 10 percent of coral reefs are threatened by sunscreen-induced bleaching. Have you ever noticed when you are seahorseswimming you have an oil slick look around the water where you are swimming? This is because traditional chemical sunscreens do not stay on well.

There are four harmful ingredients that are contributing to the coral bleaching: parabens, cinnamate, benzophenone, and a camphor derivative. There are sunscreens that do not have these ingredients. Contact me if you want an alternative to harmful traditional sunscreens.

Pamper Yourself At Home - Tequila Shooter Foot Soak

Squeeze some lime - on your feet!Tequila and lime take on achy, breaky tootsies. Mind those tired tootsies with a soak in this invigorating foot bath. Both lime essential oil and alcohol have astringent properties to reduce swelling of achy, breaky feet. Lime also soothes and conditions skin. For the ultimate foot cure, follow the use of this recipe with a sugar scrub and a rich foot cream.

Here's what you need:

  • 2 sliced limes
  • torn fresh mint leaves
  • 5 to 7 drops lime essential oil (if you don't have EO then I think you can use lime juice)
  • A shot of inexpensive tequila
  • (you could always add a few tablespoons of sea salt to make a scrub)

Here's what you do: Mix all ingredients in a large bowl of warm water. Find a comfortable spot and soak your tootsies for 10 minutes.

And why not have a Ruza (sort of like an easy margarita) while you are at it. Here is a simple version: You can add a little salt around the rim if you like - simply rub the lime across the top of the glass and then tip the rim into a plate of salt

  • Fill a tall glass with ice
  • Add 1-2 shots of yummy Tequila Squirt Soda (or use Coke for a charro negro)
  • Squeeze in half a lime
  • Stir and drink!

Event of the Month - Tequila tasting at Rosalinda's Monday, May 18th

Tequila is made from Agave plantsEver wonder about Tequila - not sure what to buy? Well, let the experts tell you. This Tequila tasting includes six Tequilas and one Margarita (These are tastings, not full size shots - we would need a limo service for sure then!).

We will have a buffet style dinner - 1 beef dish, Pollo (chicken) Fundido, a vegetarian dish, arroz (rice), frijoles (beans), soup of the day, chips, guacamole & homemade salsa. Water, tea or soda is included.

The cost per person is $45 (includes dinner, tasting, tax & gratuity). This event is on Monday, May 18th at 6:30 pm. The restaurant is opening just for us - there is a maximum of 36 guests - so don't hesitate to sign up today. Rosalinda's is located at 1124 North Pleasantburg Dr., Greenville, SC 29615. Read more about them on their website.

Due to the nature of this event, we ask that you prepay to Raspberry Moon the $45 per person. Cash or check only please.

This is going to be so much fun! I had stopped drinking Tequila years ago but the last year I have started drinking it more. Maybe because I stopped drinking the rot gut kind and have tried the real stuff!

Also, please be advised this is to be a fun event but please be responsible! Raspberry Moon and Rosalinda's are not liable for your actions, so be careful on the roads. We are simply providing you with an evening of entertainment.

Sunforgettable is now available in 3 matte finishes and 3 sparkle finishes:

  • Layered beneath foundation on the face, they give additional backlit youthfulness to mature skin.
