Congratulations to Darlene Parker for winning Luck of the Irish contest!
The hottest thing Down Under, and we're not talking Australia
Let's crank up the heat this month as we travel to sassy, sexy South America and the country of Brazil! (Hmmmm... I wonder what our service of the month will be?)
As the name suggests, brazilian waxing originated in Brazil for women who wanted to wear the new thong bikinis. Brazilian wax became famous when it was introduced into the US in 1987, when a hair removal salon, J. Sisters International Salon, opened in Manhattan. J. Sisters was started by seven Brazilian sisters: Jocely, Jonice, Joyce, Janea, Jussara, Juracy and Judseia Padilha.
However, waxing "down under" is not new; it's been prevalent for centuries in Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, Arabia, Turkey and Persia. Historically, the waxes were sugar-based and made with lemon.

It's Earth Day, Raspberry Moon Style!
It's time for our second annual Earth Day Fundraiser. In honor of Earth Day - April 22, 2009 - $5 of every facial through the month of April will go to Hands On Greenville to plant some "green" around our beautiful city for the big HOG Day Event on May 2nd.
We will also accept extra donations to give to the HOG Day make Greenville Greener fund. If you would like more information on HOG Day go to www.handsongreenville.org.
Last year we raised $140 so I'm sure we can do better this year!
In addition to our fundraiser, the print issue of my newsletter this month marks the start of a switch to environmentally friendly printing. The April newsletter is printed on 100% recycled paper (50% post-consumer) with vegetable-based inks. Over the coming months, I hope to shift all of my printing to environmentally friendly processes. |

Question of the day - What can I expect when getting a Brazilian Wax? And what are the do's and don'ts?
Those are really two questions, but both are important so we'll allow two questions this month.
So what can you expect? Basically, you will lose your modesty, increase your pain tolerance and do a little yoga all in an hour (or maybe less). Because I use a hard wax it takes a little longer; plus I do not like to rush people. Sometimes we need to take a break.
You will need to remove all bottoms and you will be draped with a towel. We will work in sections and can take everything, leave a landing strip, or leave a triangle, whichever you prefer. To do the nether regions, you will simply hug your knees to your chest. If this is not possible or if we can not get all of the hair then you will need to turn over on your knees and elbows.
Waxing Do's and Don'ts:
- When waxing your hair must be at least 1/2" long. If you are having your legs waxed you need to allow your hair to grow for 6 weeks before the first wax. Thereafter, every 4 weeks
- Do not tan 24-48 hours BEFORE OR AFTER Waxing. I will send you home!
- Avoid caffeine, stress and nicotine. Be sure to get plenty of rest the night before. I know this might sound crazy but it is true.
- When you are pregnant you will be more sensitive. Just be prepared.
- You should not wax any area if you have used Accutane® in the last 12 months. Wait 2 weeks after taking antibiotics, and don't wax any area where you have applied Retin-A for 2 months.
- Do not wax if you have lesions or sores.
- Be sure to breathe - holding your breath will not help!
- Book your appointment about 1 week after your menstrual period.
- Exfoliate the waxed area to prevent ingrown hairs.
- When having a Brazilian wax done, no extra curricular activities for 24 hours afterwards. Some people are fine before that - you know your body better then anyone else.
- With any waxing avoid hot tubs, soaking, or swimming for 24 hours afterwards.

Pamper Yourself At Home - Coffee Clove Body Scrub
Here's what you'll need:
- 3/4 cup coffee beans
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
Step 1: Put coffee beans, powdered clove and brown sugar in a coffee grinder.
Step 2: Grind coarsely, put in empty tub or Tupperware container and mix a little more.
Step 3: Add vanilla and oil and mix. Feel free to add more olive oil, but do it slowly, as it's easy to go overboard!
By being able to control the sizes of the particles in the scrub, you decide how rough you want it. The oil really does the trick in terms of keeping your limbs smooth. I shaved after using it, and my legs are super-smooth and soft, so don't be afraid to keep it a little chunky.

This isn't just for the ladies this month! Men, you're welcome to have a Brazilian Wax Treatment, too!
What's the difference? On a woman, a Brazilian is front to back and everything in between! On a man it's all of the frontal area; the back part would be separate.

Product of the Month - No Scream Waxing Kit
To help you get prepared for your wax, we have put a kit together with everything you will need - and at a special price!
No Scream Cream
For every client who wants pain-free waxing (well, it doesn't take all the pain away but most of it!). It is easy to use. NO-SCREAM CREAM is a lotion that quickly absorbs into the skin, is not greasy, sticky, or messy, and will not ruin your clothes. Apply 30 and 45 minutes prior to your waxing and relax. You will never want to be waxed again without it.
Get the Bump Out of Here
A treatment for in-growns, bumps, and razor burns that really works! It's formulated for sensitive skin, it's safe and effective. A roll-on so no more mess, spills, or wasted product! And as a bonus, even smells good!
Scrub'me'lucious
Use the microdermabrasion Scrub'Me'Luscious "Body Cocktail" for the best possible waxing experience you ever had! Exfoliation is the key to a great wax. By exfoliating, you remove all dead skin build up allowing your hair to be removed easily. In addition, you can use your "Body Cocktail" several times a week to keep your entire body silky smooth. It will also help eliminate ingrown hairs.
Scrub'Me'Luscious "Body Cocktail" won't interfere with the waxing process and is safe to use on all body parts, including the face. Has a fresh "lemony" scent.
The entire kit is $64 but through the month of April it is 15% off ($54.40). But if you book a Brazilian Wax in April you can get your kit for only $46.80 - that is 30% off! This kit is for anyone who is waxing, not just for Brazilian Waxing.
Remember you need to apply the No Scream Cream 30 minutes before your wax! |
