Earth Day is April 22nd - here are just a few tips on how you can go "green":

  • Recycle - This is one of the easiest things you can do. Not sure what can be recycled or where? Go to http://www.greatergreenville.com/city_services/recycling2.asp for more information. Also, check with local office supply stores, schools and grocery stores for recyclable items like ink cartridges, cell phones, batteries, etc.
  • Make Fewer Trips - Be sure you know what you need to get done and work efficiently. This will save on gas (which is over $3/gallon) and release less carbon dioxide.
  • Plant Trees - Let Raspberry Moon make this easy for you. See our Facial of the Month, below.

Earth Day is April 22ndHere are some interesting facts for you to consider:

  • According to Seventh Generation ("green" cleaning products) - If every household in the US replaced 1 bottle of 100 oz 2X ultra petroleum based laundry detergent with Seventh Generation's 100 oz 2X ultra plant based laundry detergent, we could save 460,000 barrels of oil, enough to heat and cool 27,000 US homes for 1 year!
  • Since 1961 the world has increased its meat consumption by 213 million tons! On average, Americans eat 8 ounces of meat per day. This is twice the global average! A 20% reduction in US meat consumption would be comparable, in greenhouse savings, to every car owner in the country switching from a sedan to a Prius. Cattle's Carbon Footprint is 9.75 lbs whereas Vegetables and Rice are only .4 lbs! - (Courtesy of Taste of Life, March 2008)
  • While hunger and malnutrition afflict about 800 million humans worldwide, most of the planet's corn, soy, and grains goes to feed cattle, chickens, and pigs - even though production of animal protein uses 2 - 5 times more grain to provide the same amount of calories. - March 2008 - Taste of Life

I read a ton of other interesting facts, but I will not drive you crazy!

Question of the day - Why should you dry brush?

The Benefits of Dry Skin Brushing

The skin is an external representation of the health of the internal body. It is the largest organ and has two very important jobs; it offers protection from the outside world and eliminates toxins that accumulate inside the body. It is referred to as the "Third Kidney". One-third of all body impurities are secreted through the skin. If skin becomes inactive, many dead cells, uric acid and other impurities will remain in the body, therefore, other eliminative organs like the lungs, the kidneys, and the colon have to labor harder and physical symptoms will arise. This explains the importance of keeping all eliminative organs open and working properly.

A few suggestions for proper elimination from the skin: In addition to regular "fun sweaty activities" otherwise know as exercise, you can induce sweating through soaking in hot baths or taking saunas. Dry skin brushing also helps to clear the path for toxins to exit the body. The skin brushing technique consists of brushing against the flow of the lymph system and exfoliating the skin.

Benefits associated with dry skin brushing include:

  • Increasing cell renewal
  • Cleansing the lymphatic system
  • Removing dead skin layers
  • Strengthening the immune system
  • Stimulating blood cleansing
  • Improving poor circulation.

Pamper Yourself - How to Dry Brush

Pamper Yourself at homeHang your brush near the shower and before you get in brush for about 5-8 minutes with a natural bristle brush.

  • Stroke 4-5 times in each area, always stroking towards the heart.
  • Start by brushing the soles of the feet and working up each leg, up the hip and the abdomen.
  • Next, brush the fingertips up the length of the arm and the arm pits.
  • Make sure to brush under the breast as well, it cleanses and protects against lumps.
  • The technique must be done dry so the perfect time is just before you shower or take a bath.

You can find these brushes at Creative Health, EarthFare, Garners and Whole Foods at a reasonable price.
